What Are The Pros And Cons Of Compulsory Military Service???
I did compulsory military service in my country for 2 years from 1989. My experiences are as follows, although it will vary from individual to individual and depend on the country in question. Pros: 1. For those just leaving school it may be a good temporary occupation whilst unsure about what you will do after leaving school or even college at an early age. 2. Usually the military have a huge range of courses that can be taken advantage of to better one’s knowledge IF you make an active attempt to use such courses. 3. Discipline, self-respect, physical conditioning and especially everyday improvisation can be improved and developed. Cons: 1. At the end of the day soldiers are made to kill, war is never constructive. 2. As in my case, aggression can be enhanced almost permanently through subversion. 3. When the bullets start flying you may die. It’s not like on CNN or Hollywood which sanitises the horrors 4. First hand conflict experience may cause psychological trauma which stays with
