What are the properties of dibutyl phthalate (DBP)?
DBP is an oily liquid that is soluble in fat and slightly soluble in water. It is not very volatile so does not vaporise readily into the atmosphere. Under the European Union classification system that applies to labelling of chemicals in commerce, it is classified as “dangerous to the environment” (very toxic to aquatic organism). Moreover, it is considered as a possible cause of harm to the unborn child and as a possible risk factor of impaired fertility in humans.
