What are the procedures if examiners are unable to agree on a joint recommendation after the oral examination?

This is very rare. However, where it does occur, the University has a step by step guide on to manage the situation: An oral examination must take place before the process of reaching an agreed recommendation can be deemed to have failed. The candidate must then be informed of this outcome. The internal examiner will then be invited to attend the School PGR Committee to discuss the reports and see if a recommendation can be agreed. If agreement is not reached, the PGR committee may appoint one or more new external examiners.
