Xerophytes do not have a problem with the up take of water as such, it is keeping the water on board they struggle with, they use fleshy stems like the cactus to store the water.cactus have to make the most of the rain in the desert and store it maybe for years. some grasses are classed as Xerophytic they store water in swollen roots.
