What are the problems or issues affecting Chinese youths in Malaysia today?
Liow: Our Chinese youths want equal opportunities. They don’t want to be discriminated against, or sidelined in any way. Take for example, getting a place in a government university. A student of any race who has studied hard to get good results to qualify for entry into a university should be given an equal chance as any other with the same results, regardless of race or creed. They feel discrimination is practised if someone else whose results are not even as good gets the place just because of his race and are naturally unhappy and feel a sense of injustice. This has been the situation all this while under the New Economic Policy (NEP). To our credit, we had faced this by adopting a positive attitude. Instead of wallowing in bitterness and resentment, we had taken steps to help ourselves instead of depending on the Government.
