What are the principal challenges faced by human resources management?
Greg Cornish: The first challenge is to help organizations become aware of the type of employees that they need, and then how to develop and train them. This means that first they must know how to attract and, even more importantly, how to retain the best employees, something that can only be accomplished by developing people. In this respect, the first challenge is to develop leadership, good leadership. Secondly, the organization needs to provide employees with enough development opportunities. Q: You point out, however, that “CEOs tend to see human resources as an easy place to cut costs, instead of conceiving of it as a source for creating value.” Why is that? GC: Good CEOs don’t see human resources as just an easy way to cut costs, because deep down they know that, sooner or later, cutting costs in human capital will adversely affect the value created by the company.
