What are the prime dates in German history?
Foundation A unified German Reich came into being, when on January 18, 1871, King William I of Prussia was proclaimed German Emperor in a coronation ceremony in Versailles. As a result of the German revolution in November 1918 Emperor William II ceded power to a government formed by democratic parties. A national assembly convened in Weimar (Thuringia) to produce a new constitution, thus establishing the “Weimar Republic”. National Socialism and Second World War The Weimar republic was overthrown by the national socialists in 1933. Adolf Hitlerconcentrated all power in his and his party’s hands. Trade unions and political parties were banned, media were used for propaganda. Political opponents were severely persecuted, thousands were sent to concentration camps. From the very beginning, racist – especially anti-semitic – mania was part of the ideology. The national socialist totalitarian dictatorship led to more than six million people killed in concentration camps in just a few years.
