What are the possible complications or risks of joint replacement surgery?
While uncommon, complications can occur during and after surgery. Some complications include infection, nerve injury, continued pain and stiffness, blood clots, implant breakage, malalignment, premature wear, limited range of motion of your joint, post operative blood transfusion, joint dislocation (hip replacement patients) and leg length inequality (hip replacement patients). We take measures to avoid complications. You will be given antibiotics before and after surgery to help prevent infection. You will also need to take antibiotics prior to any dental procedure (even cleanings) for the next two years. To prevent blood clots, you will be given blood thinners as well as asked to wear compression stockings. To prevent hip dislocation, you will be asked to follow certain precautions to keep your legs apart for six weeks.
