What Are The Possible Causes Of Coma?
Coma occurs due to the intervention in the cerebral cortex function and in the structure of the reticular activating system (RAS). There may be anatomic as well as metabolic causes of coma. Anatomic coma, as its name suggests, are caused due to the malfunction in the structure of the brain components responsible for consciousness. Examples include formation of brain tumour, infections and head injuries. These three factors are mainly responsible for damaging brain tissues and eventually obliterating those tissues. On the other hand, metabolic causes reflect that alteration in the chemical formation of the brain affecting adversely the brain function. Examples include lack of oxygen supply in the brain. Also insufficient supply of glucose and sodium may cause coma. Other examples include the presence of certain substances responsible for developing conflict with the normal mechanism of brain, such as drugs and alcohol, alternation of chemical levels in the brain due to disorders like se
