What are the possible causes of amnesia?
Physiological and psychological. Physiological amnesia is caused by the brain being damaged by trauma or disease. The brain is like an onion and the outer layer is short term memory and this is affected first by dementia. People with dementia will go further and further back in their lives and often ask for their parents as though they are children when the disease is advanced. 🙁 People suffering a blow to the head or brain damage through lack of oxygen can lose memories stored from years back due to death of the parts of the brain storing them. I knew a man who was not resuscitated for several minutes following a heart attack and remembered two of his adult children as babies and the other two not at all.
