What are the possible advantages and disadvantages to an animal of having red blood cells without nuclei? TY!!?
One advantage is: if their red blood cells do not contain a nuclei then there’s more area within the cell to carry oxygen into … and carry away waste products. The animal’s body should operate more efficient than if its red blood cells contained a nucleus. Second advantage: if the red blood cells do not have a nuclei, there is zero chance that a cancer causing mutation could occur. The animal may live a longer healthier life. One disadvantage: red blood cells without nuclei, cannot reproduce themselves and have to be replaced often in the circulatory system. So an animal would have to depend on its bone marrow to maintain a constant supply of red blood cells. —————– There’s probably others, but those are the only ones that I can think of at the moment.
