What are the positive and negative effects of the growth of international tourism?
Positive: Generation of revenue and business for the local community. Generates jobs, helps the economy. Negative: If an area becomes popular with tourists, then soon large corporate hotels, souvenir shops, fast food restaurants, and international corporations spring up and ruin the local culture and landscape. Big ugly hotels, T-shirt shops, McDonald’s and Starbucks restaurants soon transform the area into “typical tourist areas:” that look exactly the same everywhere.
