What are the physical and educational requirements to become a Spotsylvania County Firefighter?
• A • Firefighters function in hazardous environments and under great stress during emergency operations. The physical demands can be great even for short periods of time. The career agency, the Spotsylvania County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management (FREM) has established an agility test to determine the physical readiness of its applicants. The current minimum educational requirements are a high school education or GED and firefighter certification obtained through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP). In addition, all firefighters must be licensed by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (VOEMS) as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B), EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I), or EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P).
