What are the penalties of an illegal basement apartment?
As per the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code, the owner (or landlord) is responsible for carrying out the provisions of the code. Upon completion of an inspection by a Fire Prevention Inspector the owner will be notified of any items currently not meeting the requirements of the code and will be given a limited time frame to rectify the noted items. Failure to comply with the Ontario Fire Code requirements or the Inspectors orders may result in fines of up to $50,000 and/or not more than one year in prison for each violation of the code.
