The penalties for New Mexico domestic violence convictions became tougher on July 1, 2008. Governor Bill Richardson announced new legislation increasing the penalties for a third conviction of battery against any household member. The crime is now categorized as a fourth degree felony and calls for up to three years in prison and fines of up to $5,000.
