What are the penalties for filing and paying late?

0

If you file your return and paying your tax late, you may owe penalties and interest. Generally the penalty for filing late and late payment are each 10% of the tax due or $20.00 whichever is greater. The penalties are applied as a percentage of the unpaid tax, based on the number of days late. You may calculate your penalty and interest by sing the Penalty and Interest Calculator at taxexpress.utah.gov or by following the instructions in Publication 58, Utah Interest and Penalties. The Tax Commission will send you a bill if you do not pay the penalties and interest with your return, or the penalty and/or interest were not calculated correctly. Also, there is a penalty for underpaying an extension prepayment. The penalty is 2% of the unpaid tax per month of the extension period. If the return is not filed by the extension due date, failure to file and pay penalties will apply as if the extension had not been granted.
