What are the other initiatives in developing countries for endemic diseases?
Novartis has undertaken a number of additional initiatives to improve global health and to fulfill unmetmedical need. NITD has established a research laboratory, NEHCRI, in Makassar in Indonesia and in collaboration with Eiykman Institute in Jakarta and the Hassanudin University hospital in Makassar to both build capacity locally and understand the special environment of patients in that region. This laboratory is determining the resistant TB strains in Sulawesi and the nature of circulating dengue viruses in that region. In February 2008, Novartis Vaccines officially opened a new not-for-profit research institute called the Novartis Vaccines Institute for Global Health (NVGH) that will focus on developing effective and affordable vaccines for neglected infectious diseases of developing countries.
