Boehringer Ingelheim has also participated in initiatives with other organisations to increase access to anti-retrovirals in the developing or emerging economies. In 2004, the company supported new HIV/AIDS research programmes in Malawi and Cambodia and signed up to the World Health Organisation (WHO) “3 by 5” initiative that aims to make anti-retrovirals available to 3,000,000 people in Africa by 2005.
