What are the origins of the names of the political parties?
The Conservative and Unionist Party – which broadly represented the interests of the country gentry and merchant classes – traces its origins back to the Tory supporters of Duke of York, later King James II, in the late 17th century. The name was originally meant pejoratively: a Tory was said to be a type of Irish bandit.
