The Marquise Cut was inspired by the fetching smile of the Marquise de Pompadour and commissioned by the Sun King, France’s Louis XIV, who wanted a Diamond to match the smile. The Marquise was one of the most popular shapes in the 1960’s to 1980’s and like the Emerald is a traditional shape. This is probably the fourth most popular shape behind the Round, Princess and Oval.
