English is a mixture of many Languages, but the core seems to have come from the Anglo-Saxon tribes that came to England about the Sixth Century AD. They intermingled with the Celts and fought the Romans until, around 550 AD, England came to be. Latin, the trade language of the time, influenced the language, but when Alfred the Great became the saxon king, he caused many of the Latin books to be translated into “Anglish”, thus making the language more standardized. Poems of the Era, such as Beowulf, also contributed to making the language more universal. It is also proposed that Norseman influenced the sound structure and the grammar of English. We have words from the Norse, such as sky and law. One of the greatest sources of change to English occurred in 1066 AD, and was called the Norman Conquest.
