Years later as a term to mean something similar to spiritual ecstasy – gospel singers in the American South called it “rocking.” Disc jockey Alan Freed began playing this type of music for white audiences in 1951, and it is Freed who is credited with coining the phrase “rock and roll” to describe the “roll”icking R&B music that he brought over the airwaves.
