What are the origins of letterboxing?

It’s hard to say exactly when and where letterboxing as we know it started, but there is one predominate story that most people accept as true. This is that a gentelman named James Parott, a guide on the moor, left his calling card in a bottle by a pool in Dartmoor, England. He would have his clients leave theirs as well, and letterboxing was born! Letterboxing officially arrived in North America in 1998 after Smithsonian magazine published an article on the sport and has been growing exponentially ever since. The group which first partook of the hobby in the US has their own website at www.letterboxing.org.
