What are the options for securing the Internet connection?
Internet security is achieved by implementing a firewall. Firewalls range from the very simple to the very complex which means that each site needs separate assessment. The base level solution is to check the security capabilities of the router used to connect to the Internet. At many sites this will provide a relatively secure environment. Most routers implement security by filtering incoming and outgoing packets according to specified rules. These rules operate on the IP addresses contained in the packets and also on network protocols (types of services). An example of this would be a router configured to restrict outgoing access to WWW, email (SMTP) and Telnet services and restrict incoming access to only email and FTP from hosts with specified IP addresses. More complex firewalls involve the use of proxy servers which act as a gateway between Internet traffic and internal traffic. These can be complex (and costly) to implement as well as to maintain and would generally be used only
