ROUGHLY 60% OF THE POPULATION IS DRINKING ONCE A MONTH In the New Hampshire area, along with many other states, there is a new “gadget” that condemned alcoholics are using, or are forced to use, in order to deter them from drinking. Its acronym is SCRAM, and it is an ankle bracelet that monitors alcohol consumption. Noel K. Gallagher, of the Portland Press Herald, explains how it works. “SCRAM… takes a reading once an hour by ‘inhaling’ a sample of air just above the wearer’s skin and checks via infrared beam for any obstruction. Once a day, the hourly data is downloaded via modem and analyzed. Any positive reading triggers an alert… The wearer’s parole officer or court administrators have access to the password-protected information.” Basically, if the person drinks, then the parole officer knows that they drank, and the alcoholic receives due punishment.
