What are the obstacles to living an authentic life?
One thing that’s an obstacle is a sense that there are guarantees – if we do things in a certain way bad things won’t happen. We’re disconnected from the earth and from the things that sustains us and from relationships that are real and genuine. Did Eva and Nell have an epiphany when they stopped waiting to be rescued? Yes. We’re not going to be rescued. These are our lives. We’re going to have to shape them and make them ourselves. I think that’s one obstacle. It’s just that everything is so abstract and far removed from our own experience and that we expect a certain level of comfort and convenience that isn’t sustainable. I think that’s a huge obstacle, frankly. We’re living beyond our means. I thought that was crystallized in the scene where Nell begins to see all the beautiful flowers around her in the forest.
