What are the objectives of the SAARC Construction Industry Council?
The concept of a construction industry council for the seven SAARC countries was mooted by Sri Lanka in 1999 after we felt that there was an urgent need for such an organisation of South Asian countries if we were to fight for our rightful place in the international construction industry. There are several international organisations (e.g.: The International Federation of Associated Western Pacific Contractors Organization) representing the global construction industry. The construction industry of Sri Lanka, India and almost all other countries, both in the developing and developed world, are members of these organisations. However, the construction industry in the developing world and the SAARC region in particular has always found it difficult to have their voice heard in such a forum.
