What are the objectives of the New Media Newsroom?
• Our basic goal: Produce Tra-Digital reporters. • I coined this term after interviewing many editors about what they look for in young journalists. • Editors still want strong traditional reporting and writing skills – the ability to dig deeply and write clearly. In that regard, we teach the fundamental skills that have eternal journalistic value. • In addition, editors today urgently want digital awareness, meaning sensitivity to the multi-media ways to tell a story or enhance a journalistic package. Further, to the extent possible, they desire actual digital skills, such as picture shooting, audio collection, interactive timeline creation, video editing, etc. You don’t have to be computer wizard, but the more skills the merrier. • Put another way, a digital mind-set is most important, but technical skills add significantly to your employment potential. • Remember: The news industry is grabbing and groping, trying to figure out how to maximize the Web.
