What are the Obama Administration and Congress’ energy goals?
Barack Obama made it clear during last year’s campaign that he would vigorously pursue climate change legislation … and renewable energy standards, energy efficiency, new generating capacity and a stronger, smarter grid. Now, as President, he is aggressively pursuing his agenda with a theme he repeats at every opportunity: “The nation that leads in energy will be the nation that leads the world in the 21st century.” We are moving forward, but reaching his goal on the timetable he has outlined will be daunting—and expensive. Co-ops, of course, will do all within their power to strengthen the generation, transmission and delivery of electricity to their members. With this commitment foremost in mind, co-op leaders and members urge Congress not to take any precipitous action that may lead to a law filled with unintended consequences, and, ultimately, does little more than create poor public policy and increase your electric bill.
