What are the Oakland Zoos plans for the future?
Now that the older parts of the Zoo have been renovated, the Oakland Zoo plans to build a new Veterinary Medical Hospital and the California Trail exhibit. This 56-acre extension will include a 36-acre ecological recovery zone and 20 acres of new development. The California expansion has been part of the Zoo’s master plan for nearly 20 years, and was approved by neighbors and the Oakland City Council in 1998. In 2002 the voters of Oakland approved Measure G to provide funds for Chabot Space and Science Center, the Oakland Museum, and the Oakland Zoo. The Zoo’s funds were designated for two major projects: renovating the Children’s Zoo and building an expansion of the Zoo to focus on native California wildlife. After the Children’s Zoo renovation was completed in 2006 the Zoo reengaged in design and planning for the Veterinary Medical Hospital and the California Trail exhibit. The Zoo is in the process of finalizing its plans for submission to and review by the City of Oakland.
