The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) was created as a result of the Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986 and became operational in September 1990. It contains information on various actions taken against physicians and dentists. The Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank (HIPDB) was created as a result of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and became operational in March 2000. It contains information on various actions taken against health care practitioners, providers and suppliers. These databanks are not available to the public.
