What are the needles like?
Only sterile, disposable needles are used so there is no risk of infection. We use a needle once, then dispose of it. Acupuncture needles are small and hair-thin. They are solid, not hollow like needles used by doctors. The end of an acupuncture needle is smooth and rounded. Acupuncture needles are not designed to cut the skin. Instead, when an acupuncture needle is inserted, the round edge pushes the tissue aside without cutting it. Acupuncture needles are so thin it’s as if they can glide through the spaces between the individual cells of the body.
Acupuncture needles are far different from the hypodermic needle that used in giving infections. First, the needles are solid and no medicines put on them or injected through them. The needles are varying in length. They are inserted into the skin, from 1/8 to several inches ‘areas of the body with overlying fat. There only use disposable needles. The skin cleansed with alcohol before they inserted.
Many patients are often worried that the needles will be painful. Unlike needles used for injection, acupuncture needles are solid and are extremely fine with a sharp point. The needles come in different sizes, 0.25mm x 40mm, 0.18mm x 25mm, 0.16mm x 13mm, for example. Similar to most practitioners, we use disposable needles.
