What are the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA) requirements for treatments in communities?

Federal agencies are coordinating with the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) on how to bring better efficiencies to the environmental analysis process for National Fire Plan projects. CEQ has no direct control or oversight on how we do NEPA, but can provide interpretation of policy and advice on how to improve on the analysis process. All federal agencies are required by the ESA to consult with the Fish & Wildlife Service and/or the National Marine Fisheries Service, depending on the species involved, to ensure that any action they authorize, fund, or carry out is not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of any threatened or endangered species or result in the destruction or adverse modification of critical habitat for the species. Consultation procedures have been refined and streamlined through interagency experience over the past several years.
