What are the National Electrical Code Requirements for GFCIs?
In new construction, as well as in major renovations of older homes, the NEC requires GFCI protection in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, crawl spaces, garages and outdoors. The Code also requires protection of specific equipment including deicing, snow melting, electrically operated pool covers and pool lighting. Because many homes were built before these code requirements went into effect, however, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that as many as 70 percent of existing dwellings may lack GFCI protection.
