I assume you are talking about the Red Ensign. There were two versions of the Red Ensign. The original version had a coat of arms that consisted of the coat of arms of the four original provinces. It was replaced with a Red Ensign with the coat of arms of Canada. The flag was never official on land, but instead only on the merchant marine. There are two variants still in use as provincial flags (Ontario and Manitoba). There is also a Blue Ensign that was used by the Canadian Navy until the current Maple Leaf flag was made official.
