What are the mountaineering options in the park?
A. Permits are required for climbing both Mt. McKinley and Mt. Foraker; these are available through the Talkeetna Ranger Station. As far as small peaks that may be approached from the north side of the range, three peaks see the most use: Scott, Pendleton and Brooks. All visitors wishing to engage in mountaineering must speak with a ranger before heading out about specific guidelines for these types of trips. The park requires an inventory of equipment taken and the experience level of all members of the trip. Q. Can I bring a firearm in the backcountry for protection? A. No, firearms are only permitted in Preserve lands and new park additions. Contact a park ranger for information concerning these special circumstances.
