What are the motivations of starting a Non Profit Organization?

I appreciate all your answers. I agree to the fact that NPO should be driven by a sense of charity, service, humanity, patriotism, contribute/ give back to the society and so on. Given that the good intention is there, it may also be done by a “for profit” organization – for example ITC doing it for Indian villages. I would like to quote the example of Mr Bill Gates. He worked and reaped huge dividends by working for a most profitable venture ever. However, at one point in his career, he donated a major portion of all his earnings. There must be some significant financial/ legal/ social/ brand advantages of forming an NPO. I am looking for more answers in those dimension with specific focus on India and the US. I liked the answers from Gordon Dymowski, Mariah Zabriskie and Marcin Beben.
