What are the most used instruments in Classical Music ?
When it comes to concertos, piano is number one, violin is number two, and cello is number three. There is something about those three instruments which makes them the best instruments to show off on. Players of other instruments have to play arrangements of compositions originally written for those big three. I don’t know about solo literature, but I think it correlates fairly closely. Players of other instruments tend to have patron saints who were virtuosos on their instrument, who composed music for their instrument, and who fought for liberation from their bondage. Salzedo is a patron saint for harpists, Quantz is a patron saint for flutists, Dragonetti and Koussevitsky are patron saints for bassists, and Segovia and Sor are patron saints for guitarists.
