What are the most severe environmental problems and threats facing Argentina today?
Without doubt, climate change is one of the most serious topics in Argentina. Specifically, the big problems include deforestation and the retreat of the glaciers – a major immediate worry for regions like Mendoza and San Juan whose agricultural economies depend heavily on water from the glaciers. Then there is the rising sea level and the threat this poses for low-level coastal areas. These are priorities in terms of climate change, and then there are other matters related to the environment, like pollution, in the Riachuelo [river] for example. All the municipalities that lie in the basin of the River Riachuelo – which stretches beyond the city of Buenos Aires and affects around five million people – are a big worry for us.
