What are the most representative composers to each musical movement?
The difficulty with question is figuring out what exactly these composers are supposed to represent. the previous answerer had a nice list of some of the composers from each period who have made the repertoire, but this is not out of being representative, but quite the contrary, by being the exception to the normative standards of their era. Maybe it’s lawyer in me that’s trying to answer the question you asked even though its not really the question you meant to ask. Here’s my list: Medieval: Leonin, Peronin, Anonymous Rennaisance: Byrd, Gibbons, Dufay, Purcell Baroque: Bach, Telemann, Schutz, Scarlatti Classical: Beethoven, Haydn, Schumann Romantic: Brahms, Berlioz, Wagner Impressionist/early20th C.: Debussy, Ravel, Schoenberg, Webern Modern/late 20th C.
