What are the most interesting plants to be found growing wild in England?
I would suggest the sundews are amongst the most interesting . These plants – species of Drosera – have leaves covered in bristles which glisten in the sunlight, hence their popular name. The bristles are in fact glands tipped with a glue-like substance to which insects stick. The insect is then enfolded by the bristles which turn inwards and the insect dies. As its body decomposes the liquids are taken in by the plant. Sundews grow in wet, acid ground which is very poor in nutrients. The supplements provided by these insects are of great value to the plant. (Incidentally mushrooms are not plants.
