What are the most important research axes in the area of e-government worldwide?
Within the European Union, work in the area started in 1992 within the 3rd Framework Programme (FP) under the title European Nervous System (ENS), with the objective of interconnecting the existing national networks for improved efficiency at EU level. Under the 4th FP, this work was expanded to cover more domains of the central administrations, as well as more levels (including regional and local issues). IADS (Integrated Applications for Digital Sites) was created to compensate the fragmentation of the domain and work towards the needs of cities and regions. Under the 5th FP, an even broader view of the area was considered, with the integration of all levels of government as well as the management approach. Currently, the projects that are financially supported by the EC are clustered in two areas: tele-democracy and smart government, which also indicate the main research streams.
