What are the most important aspects of physical fitness for surfing? What should I focus on?
Stamina is most important at this stage of the game. If you have access to a pool, begin swimming laps as soon as possible. The secret is to develop strength and stamina through your full range of motion in the shoulders and upper back. If you do not have a pool, start doing push ups, and pull ups. Sit up are also a good exercise, as it will help with the core. Planks are another easy exercise, as they do not require any work out equipment and can be done anywhere. Another aspect which you need to address is balance. You can be in the best shape of your life, but without balance, you will not have an enjoyable experience in the water. An Indo Board is an excellent way to develop “surfing balance.” If you can’t find/afford one, try getting a 10 ft section of 4″ x 8″ wood, like a balance beam. Practice walking frontwards and backwards on that several times, along with balancing on each foot for a period of time. Not only will that help with your balance, it will also work on your core. G
