Neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment. CPS investigations determined that in 1997: • 54 percent of victims suffered from neglect • 24 percent of victims suffered from physical abuse • 13 percent of victims suffered from sexual abuse • 6 percent of victims suffered from emotional maltreatment • 2 percent of victims suffered from medical neglect. Many children suffer more than one type of maltreatment.
