What are the most common types of loss?
Grief occurs in response to any type of loss. Death is the most profound and absolute loss, and is most often associated with grief. However, grief occurs following any loss: endings of a significant relationship, leaving home, finishing school, change in employment status (e.g. retirement, being laid off or fired), loss of a dream or goal (e.g. injury resulting in not being able to pursue athletic goals). Change occurs continually throughout life, and any change implies a loss. The degree of grief will vary according to the significance and meaning of the loss to the particular individual.
