What are the most common reasons for recalls?
Many of the recent recalls in 2007 were the result of toys that contain impermissible levels of lead paint and toys made with powerful micromagnets. In the case of magnets, the hazard occurs when small magnets are ingested and swallowed, posing the risk of severe intestinal injury. The issue with magnets is one that has just recently been identified, and a standard was quickly developed to address it. Recalls for magnets were a response to this new information and requirement. The issue with the excess lead level in paint is lead exposure. While the concentration of lead in paint in the recalled toys is extremely small, the products violated the U.S. toy safety regulations and are unacceptable to the toy industry.
