What are the most common contagious diseases found in horses?
There are many factors which go into the answer to this question, such as where you live, which diseases are endemic to your area ( meaning they occur naturally and are present in the horse’s environment all the time) the time of year and the season, what type of climate your area has, how much work any horse does, his or her travel schedule and level of exposure to other horses, other animals, and to people, and even the type of diet the horse eats. All of these play a role in determining which diseases are common in what places in horses, and should be taken into consideration when planning a vaccination program for any horse. Another point to consider is that not all diseases which affect horses are common in all areas- some are specific to a given part of the country only, and are not found in other places. A simple example of this is Potomac Horse Fever, or PHF, which is generally only found in the Potomac River Basin in Maryland and parts of northern Virginia, and nowhere else. W
