What are the “modalities” that might be used?
A. The term “modalities” refers to treatments provided to increase healing and ease pain for the patient. The most common forms used by our clinic would be classified into several categories, including thermal, electrical, and mechanical. Thermal modalities would include the use of heat or cold treatments to further assist in the patient’s healing or pain management. Electrical stimulation is a modality commonly used to assist in pain management, muscle activity, and healing. Certain aspects of treatment involving the use of equipment to assist in pain relieving and mobility techniques would be considered mechanical modalities. Modalities are prescribed to each patient by the physical therapist based on the individual’s specific condition and diagnosis.
