What are the mobile subscriptions patterns in Africa ?
The mobile phone users split by technology in Africa shows an overwhelming share of 2G subscribers that accounts for over 98% of the total reported base which is not a surprise as 3G roll-out is still at its dawn on the continent with only 15 countries having either UMTS or CDMA2000 access networks. According to Dataxis estimates, Africa is home to about 5.6 million 3G users as of Q209. The same gap between 2G and 3 G users almost exists between pre-paid and post-paid subscribers, since the former accounts for nearly 96% of the overall mobile users. Revenues and ARPU highlights Africa’s 413.7 million mobile users generated about €8.4 billion of revenues in the second quarter of 2009, thus representing a €7 of Arpu which is quite low in comparison to some other emerging markets but still more than in India for example where the average is less than €3.
