Linux operating systems and open source browsers are also supported. Users will also need to have a network interface card (NIC), sometimes simply referred to as a network card, which is a piece of hardware designed to allow communication over a network. Most computers purchased within the last three years come standard with a network interface built into the motherboard, thus eliminating the need to purchase additional hardware. Most desktop computers may be wired directly into the CPE (see below) using an Ethernet cable.
